What is a Newborn Care Specialist?

A Newborn Care Specialist is a trained professional who specializes in the care of newborns during the first few weeks or months of life. They assist families with feeding, sleep routines, soothing techniques and overall newborn wellness often working overnight to allow parents to rest.

What are the typical hours for a Newborn Care Specialist?

NCSs typically work overnight shifts, often 10–12 hours (for example, 8 PM to 6 AM). Some also offer daytime support, depending on the family’s needs and the specialist’s availability.

Do Newborn Care Specialists sleep?

An NCS may lightly rest when the baby is asleep but their primary role is to be available and attentive to the baby’s needs throughout the night. They do not sleep like a family member would they are on duty.

How long do Newborn Care Specialists stay with the family?

This varies by family. Some NCSs stay for 2–4 months, while others may work with a family for several months typically until the baby is sleeping through the night or the parents feel confident on their own.

What is a Doula?

A doula is a non medical professional trained to provide emotional, physical, and educational support before, during and after childbirth. There are different types of doulas birth doulas and postpartum doulas being the most common.
